Nes first convened under a metallic Coleraine sky during autumn 2003, in McNulty's Bar at around 3 O'Clock in the afternoon. One member had enough for a whiskey, the other could only afford a diet cola.

Ryan and Andrew had become acquainted with one another through their respective bands' involvement with the wtss collective during the summer of 2002. With Pond and Litmist now in permanent hiatus, the pair expressed to one another a desire to make music that broke away from melody and structure, instead embracing the noise of Sonic Youth and the complexity of Radiohead Amnesiac-era b-sides.

Within days, the pair would be recording at Colerabbey studios, using the Yamaha MD 8 multitrack MiniDisc machine that had been purchased using the takings from wtss fanzine and raffle sales.

Initial sessions were conducted under the auspice that any usable material would be revisited and recorded "properly", with finished lyrics, correctly tunes guitars, and parts played in time. This meant meetings carried with them a sense of abandon, allowing both players to perform outside their established roles of guitarist and singer. When it came to switching on the red light and tracking material, anything was fair game: the pair experimented with whatever instruments were afforded to them, often improvising new sounds out of boxes, pedals and broken equipment that they found to hand. Pianos were played, guitars were encouraged to feedback. An early meeting saw Ryan - in pursuit of the correct guitar tone - stab his Squire guitar into the Colerabbey carpet, breaking the neck in the process. To this day the dent in the floor is still visible. Heirlooms contained within the Colerabbey ground floor were improvised as percussive instruments, lyrics were culled from dream diaries, the pair frequently swapped instruments just to see what would happen... in short, all bets were off.

The grand ambition from all of these energetic sessions, was to map out an album of material that would be attempted afresh, using established studio methods. This quickly revealed itself as impossible: what had already been recorded was precious and unrepeatable. An edited highlights of the work so far was proposed, and thus The Sounds Of Heart Failure: Championship Edition was born.
